Fiberglass Pools vs. Gunite Pools

Fiberglass pools and gunite (concrete) pools both have their advantages and disadvantages. Here are some key differences between the two:

  1. Installation: Fiberglass pools are pre-manufactured and installed in one piece, while gunite pools are constructed on-site using a rebar framework and sprayed concrete. Fiberglass pool installation is typically faster and less invasive, while gunite pool installation can take several months and may require significant excavation.

  2. Cost: Fiberglass pools are less expensive and require less maintenance and fewer repairs over time. Gunite pools are typically more expensive and usually require more maintenance and repairs due to their porous surface and need for re-plastering every 10-15 years.

  3. Durability: Fiberglass pools are generally more durable than gunite pools, as they are resistant to algae growth and have a non-porous surface that resists staining and fading. Gunite pools can be prone to cracks and leaks over time, especially if they are not properly maintained or the ground around them shifts.

  4. Design Options: Gunite pools offer more design flexibility than fiberglass pools, as they can be customized with unique shapes, features, and finishes. Fiberglass pools, while available in a variety of sizes and shapes, have limited customization options.

Ultimately, the choice between a fiberglass pool and a gunite pool comes down to individual preferences, needs, and budget.
